Concerns over a growing right-wing populism across Europe has prompted 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to recommend leaders to “refuse to offer refuge and support to migrants.”
In an interview with The Guardian, Clinton said, “I think Europe needs to get a handle on migration because that is what lit the flame.”
The former secretary of state also mentioned how she admired leaders like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who essentially opened the floodgates to foreigners fleeing from political crises in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria in 2015.
“[It’s] fair to say Europe has done its part, and must send a very clear message — ‘we are not going to be able to continue to provide refuge and support’ — because if we don’t deal with the migration issue it will continue to roil the body politic.”
Since 2015, more than one million migrants have arrived in the EU.
