After surveying the genetic codes of five million animals, including humans, from 100,000 different species, scientists from Rockefeller University and the University of Basel have concluded people “sprang from a single pair of adults after a catastrophic event almost wiped out the human race.” Additionally, the snippets of DNA that were studied suggest that nine out of every animal species alive today also came from a single pair of beings. Research Associates David Thaler and Mark Stoeckle, the scientists who headed the effort, say that humans and animals alike all came into existence at roughly the same time – approximately 250,000 years ago.
