New Mexico ICE Facility Caters To Transgender Detainees…

New Mexico is the only state in the country that has a detention facility for transgender illegal aliens, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The dedicated unit located in the Cibola County Correctional Center was opened in 2017 and houses approximately 27 detainees who identify as transgender women. A total of 400 inmates reside in the facility.

The facility reportedly has large communal areas where detainees are allowed to watch television. Examining rooms, a small lab and a pharmacy are also available.

Additionally, LGBTQ advocacy groups offer free legal services in “specialized meeting rooms.”

Corey Price, a field officer director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, says he believes it’s “very important to be transparent,” adding the Milan, New Mexico-based operation has “nothing to hide.”

“We realized there was a need. We had a constant challenge trying to find suitable accommodations for the transgender population, so we stood this up a couple of years ago, and it’s been very successful,” said Price.
