Pandemic "Newspeak": Is Orwellian-style Language Being Used To Brainwash Us?

Ever since the deadly COVID-19 outbreak spread from Wuhan, a sprawling city in central China’s Hubei province, to countries throughout the world, we’ve been constantly hearing certain buzzwords such as “social distancing” and “invisible enemy” on television, radio and the internet. Here are a few more:

New normal
Stay home, save lives
Stay in place
Shelter in place
Self-quarantine
Shutdown
Lockdown
We are at war
Hidden killer
Flatten the curve
Slow the spread
Uncertain times
Unprecedented
Vulnerable
Contact tracing
Asymptomatic
Flu-like symptoms
Essential worker
Front lines
We’re in this together
Separate but together (or united)

Are these particular watchwords, which seem similar to “newspeak,” being used by politicians and mainstream media pundits to condition the general population and obscure the truth, deflect scrutiny, and promote a certain agenda?

The term “newspeak” originated from George Orwell’s popular dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four:

“Newspeak is the language of Oceania, a totalitarian superstate that is the setting in 1984. To meet the ideological requirements of English Socialism (Ingsoc) in Oceania, the ruling Party created Newspeak, a controlled language of simplified grammar and restricted vocabulary, meant to limit the freedom of thought—personal identity, self-expression, free will—that threatens the ideology of the régime of Big Brother and the Party, who have criminalised such concepts into thoughtcrime, as contradictions of Ingsoc orthodoxy.” (Source)

Some think these pandemic-related sayings or jargon may have alternative meanings. Examples:

Shelter in place = Cower in place
Self-quarantine = Self-isolate
Flatten the curve = Hike the spike
New normal = New World Order
Invisible enemy = Imaginary monster (or bogeyman)
We are in this together = Group think
Essential workers or front-liners = Slaves
