Apparently “dislike mobs” are a thing as popular video sharing platform YouTube is considering removing the dislike button after a number of recent clips from popular companies (including itself) got absolutely obliterated in the like/dislike ratio department. Here are some examples: YouTube Rewind 2018 (2.5 million likes & 15 million dislikes) – Blizzard”s Diablo Immortal Cinematic Trailer (28K likes & 728K dislikes) – Gillete”s Toxic Masculinity Short Film (751K likes & 1.3 million dislikes) – According to The Verge: Tom Leung, director of project management at YouTube, addressed the issue of “dislike mobs” in a recent issue of Creator Insider, YouTube”s corporate series for creators. “Dislike mobs” are the YouTube equivalent to review bombings on Steam – a group of people who are upset with a certain creator or game decide to execute an organized attack and downvote or negatively review a game or video into oblivion. It”s an issue on YouTube as well, and one that creators have spoken out against many times in the past. Reports have suggested that a video with a high number of dislikes – that outweighs the number of positive likes – is less likely to be recommended, and could therefore hurt the creator”s channel. The only current option creators have to avoid a ratings disaster in their videos is to visit their profile preferences page and switch off ratings (which will prevent like and dislike statistics to be seen).
